Drawing Room Instructor

About our Workshops:

We offer professionally instructed, beautifully curated workshops to promote learning, creativity, and community building.

About our Instructors:

We maintain a standard of excellence in our workshops. Our instructors all work professionally in their field of expertise and draw from their own knowledge, training, and personal practice to develop high-quality workshops specifically for our community. Our instructor team also collaboratively builds the Drawing Room Cohort program, a social and educational program designed for students to build community through multimedia learning.

We are currently hiring instructors who can teach at least one of the following skills/mediums at beginner and open levels. At the moment we are looking to hire one instructor per skill:

  • Ceramics (hand-building)

  • Watercolor painting (Gouache skills are a plus!)

  • Printmaking (you must be able to teach block printing. A background in other printmaking techniques is a strong plus!)

  • Fiber & Textiles (You must be able to teach hand knitting and weaving. Additional textile skills are a strong plus!)

What we’re looking for:

  • You are a working artist with a portfolio of current and recent work that demonstrates professionalism, strong technique, and a unique approach to your medium

  • Either a BFA (or equivalent arts degree) or professional-level training and work experience in your field

  • Ability to break down complex techniques and concepts in a way that makes them approachable for all levels of adult learners, including beginners

  • Ability to both verbally teach and physically demonstrate your skill set with clarity

  • A genuine sense of joy for sharing what you love with others

  • Kind, encouraging, empathetic

  • Ability to build friendly relationships with students and act as a creative mentor during Cohort programs

  • An excitement for developing programming inspired by your own unique approach to art-making. At Drawing Room, we are at our best when we teach what we love and encourage instructors to develop their ideas based on what excites them!

  • A strong passion for community building and a willingness/interest to engage with all facets of Drawing Room’s community, in person and online (via our Discord channels)

  • A love of collaboration and a desire to be a part of a team of creative people who are working together to grow Drawing Room

  • Openness to critique, suggestions, and a willingness to evolve. Drawing Room is a young company that is constantly growing. We are looking for someone open to a mentality of “let’s try it and we’ll change it if we need to until we get it right for our community”

  • Very comfortable with public speaking, socializing, and able to lead a room as both an instructor and a social host

  • A roll-up-your-sleeves DIY attitude. Instructors will be expected to set and clean-up the space, supplies, and sometimes furniture before and after workshops. Ability to do minimal furniture lifting/rearranging.

  • A good sense of humor

  • A sensitivity to the varying needs of a class and the ability to think quickly on your feet and improvise if needed

  • Eye for detail and an appreciation and care for “the little things” that make a workshop experience special (examples: table settings, signage, handmade class materials, space layout)

Compensation & role details:

  • This opening is for a part-time position, with a commitment of minimum four 2.5 hour long workshops per month (Approximately 10 hours of teaching, plus extra set up and clean up time). You must also be able to commit additional time (approximately 10 Hours) per month for team meetings, training, workshop development, and a few Open Hours in-studio days*

*In-studio days: It’s important for our community to maintain a sense of connection between all the facets of our programming. Instructors will be asked to spend a shift on-site visiting Open Hours at least once a month where they will be available to chat with and offer ideas/guidance to any current or former students that want to stop by.

  • $45 an hour for instruction, $30 an hour for instructor-adjunct work (set-up, clean-up time, workshop prep, meetings, on-site time requirements)

  • Please note that in our application process we will also prioritize artists who are comfortable committing to teaching at Drawing Room exclusively and interested in developing unique Drawing Room-specific workshops. We have an amazing tight-knit team of instructors who work collaboratively to build our programming together. While you will be developing and teaching your own workshops, we are looking for applicants interested in being part of a team. We are also looking for applicants who are invested in being active members in our larger community.

  • This role is set to begin training immediately and teaching in March
