Field Trip: Museum! A travel sketchbooking workshop

  • Drawing Room 247 West 30th Street New York, NY, 10001 United States (map)

In the same way writing helps us remember things we learn…drawing can help you capture and remember your experiences as you travel, in a completely different way than photos. In this edition, we’re going on a field trip to the American Museum of Natural History!

Learn how to create and keep a visual diary, effectively and quickly capturing the energy, movement, vibe and experience of various settings. Join us on a guided sketchbook adventure to wander, observe, and gather inspiration from the wonders at the beautiful museum in our favorite city.

This workshop is the perfect start for those interested in beginning a visual travel diary and making friends as we create on the go! Keep a custom, hand-printed Drawing Room tote bag and hand-stamped multimedia sketchbook! You can also bring your own sketchbook if you already have one!

Instruction by Meiying Thai.

Please come prepared with comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather (think shade and sun protection!), shoes you can walk in, a bottle of water, and if you would like, a picnic blanket! We will also be taking the subway (1 ride) so please also bring a metrocard/OMNY. We will provide art materials for this workshop, though feel free to bring any additional on-the-go drawing materials that you love!

    • A hand-printed Drawing Room tote to keep!

    • A hand-engraved drawing sketchbook for you to start during this workshop, then keep and bring with you on your next trip or around the city as a visual diary!

    • Sketching utensils (pencils, pens, etc.) to use during the event (these are to be returned at the end)

    • Guidance and instruction on how to “travel sketch”! Additional optional demos at Meiying’s picnic blanket. Examples include gestural/partially blind drawing, architectural sketches, and more.

    • Some emergency water and basic snacks available while on the go

    • Water and tea when you get back to Drawing Room!

  • Drawing warm ups will get our bodies moving and flowing! Warm ups will include discussion and demos on the following:

    • How to create different marks and lines

    • How we use our bodies to draw

    • How to change the rhythm of a line

    • How to build hand-eye coordination through collaborative observational exercises

The second segment of class is open drawing/drinks. Choose from either a still-life composition or explore drawing as a practice of imaginative storytelling with prompts.

Instructor will be available to offer 1-1 help and guidance.
